Trial Balance
The Trial Balance (Reports > Financial Statements > Trial Balance, /accounts/trial-balance) is a summary financial statement that lists the Debit and Credit balances of all active ledger accounts grouped by their accounting categories (Assets, Liabilities, Capital, Income, and Expenses).
What is this?
In double-entry accounting, every transaction has an equal debit and credit. A Trial Balance confirms whether total debits and total credits remain balanced across all accounts—including General Ledger Opening Balances and all posted vouchers—and highlights any imbalance immediately at the top of the report.
When should I use it?
Accountants and business owners use the Trial Balance at the end of a month, quarter, or financial year to verify accounting accuracy, inspect group subtotals, and prepare for the Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet.
How to use it
- Open Reports (
/reports) and select Trial Balance under Financial Statements (or navigate directly to/accounts/trial-balance). - Select the Financial Year or reporting period (
As Of Date), then click Apply Filters. - Check the balance status banner at the top of the report (which confirms whether Total Debits equal Total Credits or flags an Imbalance Detected if an unlinked opening balance exists).
- Review all active accounts grouped under Assets, Liabilities, Income, and Expenses, along with each group's subtotal and the grand Total row at the bottom.
- Click Export CSV or Print in the top-right toolbar to export the statement.

Columns explained
| Column | What it means |
|---|---|
| Account Code | Unique system or custom general ledger code (e.g., 11101 for Cash in Hand, 11300 for Inventory Stock, 41201 for Commission Income). |
| Account Name | The specific ledger account (e.g., Cash in Hand, HDFC Bank, Farmer/Party accounts, Sales Account, Charge accounts). |
| Type | Primary accounting classification (Asset, Liability, Capital, Income, Expense). |
Debit (Dr) | Total net debit balance for the account as of the selected date. |
Credit (Cr) | Total net credit balance for the account as of the selected date. |
Important Note
- If you enter a single-sided opening balance in Setup > Opening Balances > General Ledger Opening (
/masters/account-opening-balances) without a corresponding credit/debit offset (such as Owner's Capital), the Trial Balance will display an Imbalance Detected alert showing the exact difference until your opening balances are balanced. - While a balanced Trial Balance confirms that total debits equal total credits, you should still review individual Party & Farmer Ledgers to ensure every transaction was posted to the intended party.
